Have you ever picked up a candle in your favourite home store and wondered what makes it warrant that higher price tag versus buying a candle in Aldi or Primark for £2? In this blog we're going to break down why...
First and foremost, the quality of ingredients used in handmade candles really are unbeatable. Scotts Lifestyle candles for example are made with our signature blended soy wax, premium essential or fragrance oils from world-class perfumiers with natural cotton wicks for a clean burn. Soy wax burns cleaner and slower so therefore making your candle long-lasting, and our premium fragrance oils are carefully blended to create more distinct and sophisticated scent combinations that can fill an entire room.
Testing is a huge part of making handmade home fragrance products. Each and every product has a different ratio of fragrance to wax, a different wick, a different number of reeds etc. Candle making really is a science and to make a truly great candle takes time to perfect. I really don't think big brands put the same emphasis on this element of the process as it is costly and can take months (trust us we know!).
The difference in price is also be attributed to the production process. At Scotts Lifestyle all our candles are hand poured in small batches for maximum quality. Larger brands use overseas factories that crank out thousands of candles at once. The process of hand-pouring and carefully hand-packaging each candle is labour intensive but it ensures that every candle is made and finished perfectly.
Design is another key component in the costs when you buy from a small brand. When designing the Scotts Lifestyle range we wanted to offer products that look and smell fabulous. This starts with the box that the candle comes in right through to the glass the candle is housed in. Every component is thought out and sourced from suppliers where sustainability is as important to them as it is to us. With all this said, I'm not knocking an Aldi candle, before I started making candles I used to buy them too! However, since starting Scotts it really has made me see things differently, and I can't go back.
