How To Make A Reed Diffuser Smell Stronger
There’s nothing quite like walking through your front door and being greeted by a beautiful fragrance.
But if you’ve had your reed diffuser for a while and you're thinking, “I can't smell it anymore”, don't give up on it just yet.
There are a few simple things you can do to make your reed diffuser smell stronger — without simply using more fragrance.
Here are our tips for getting the most from your reed diffuser.
1. Turn your reeds
This is the easiest way to give your reed diffuser a little fragrance boost.
Carefully remove the reeds from the bottle, turn them upside down and place them back into the diffuser.
The fragrance-soaked ends that were sitting inside the bottle are now exposed to the air, helping to release more fragrance into your room.
You don't need to turn your reeds every day, though. Doing it too frequently will make your fragrance evaporate more quickly, meaning your diffuser won't last as long.

2. Check how many reeds you're using
More reeds generally mean more fragrance being released into the room.
But more isn't always better.
If your diffuser is in a small room, you may only need a few reeds to create a beautiful fragrance.
If it's in a larger or open-plan space, you may need more.
A good approach is to start with fewer reeds and gradually add more until you find the right level of fragrance for your space.
It's all about finding your sweet spot.
3. Think about where you've placed your diffuser
The position of your reed diffuser can make a surprisingly big difference.
Reed diffusers work by allowing fragrance to travel up through the reeds and disperse into the air. A little natural air movement helps distribute that fragrance around the room.
Try placing your diffuser somewhere such as:
- A hallway or entrance
- A living room
- A bedroom
- A bathroom
- An open-plan living space
However, avoid placing it directly next to a radiator or heater, or somewhere that receives lots of direct sunlight.
Heat can cause the fragrance to evaporate faster, which means you'll get through your diffuser more quickly.
4. Give your diffuser some space
It's tempting to style your diffuser amongst lots of other beautiful things on a shelf.
But if the reeds are tucked behind books, ornaments or a vase, you're making it harder for the fragrance to circulate.
Give your diffuser a little breathing room.
You don't need to put it in the middle of the room — just make sure the reeds aren't enclosed or surrounded by objects.
5. Replace old reeds
If you've had your diffuser for a while, your reeds may simply have reached the end of their useful life.
Over time, reeds can become saturated with fragrance and collect dust. This can affect how effectively they draw up and distribute the fragrance.
If your diffuser still has plenty of fragrance left but doesn't seem to be performing as well as it used to, try replacing the reeds.
And if you're changing to a completely different fragrance, always use fresh reeds rather than putting a new fragrance through old ones.
6. Don't forget that your nose can get used to a fragrance
This is one of the most common reasons you stop noticing a diffuser.
Your sense of smell adapts to familiar scents. After being exposed to the same fragrance continuously, your brain can start filtering it out.
The fragrance hasn't necessarily disappeared — you've simply become accustomed to it.
Try leaving the room for a while and coming back.
Or better still, go out for a few hours and notice what happens when you walk back through your front door.
That moment when you think:
“Oh, my house smells amazing.”
That's the fragrance that's been there all along.
7. Check how much fragrance is left
It sounds obvious, but it's easy to forget how long you've had your diffuser.
As the fragrance gets lower, there is naturally less oil available to travel up through the reeds.
If your bottle is nearly empty, it may simply be time for a refill.
And if you love your diffuser bottle, you don't need to replace the whole thing.
A reed diffuser refill allows you to keep using the bottle you already have and choose another fragrance when you're ready for a change.
8. Think about the size of your room
One diffuser can work beautifully in a small room but feel much less noticeable in a large, open-plan space.
If you're trying to fragrance a particularly large room, think about where the diffuser is positioned and whether one diffuser is enough for the space.
Sometimes using two smaller diffusers in different areas can work better than trying to make one diffuser fragrance a whole large room.
9. Give your fragrance time
One of the lovely things about reed diffusers is that they work continuously.
Unlike a candle, you don't have to light anything or remember to switch it on.
Once your reeds have absorbed the fragrance, they continuously release it into the room.
So rather than expecting a huge burst of fragrance every time you walk past, think of your diffuser as creating a beautiful background scent that makes your home feel good throughout the day.
That's exactly why we love them at Scotts.
The secret to a great-smelling home isn't always more fragrance
If your reed diffuser doesn't seem as strong as it once was, don't immediately assume it's stopped working.
Try these simple things first:
Turn the reeds.
Check the number of reeds you're using.
Move your diffuser away from heat and direct sunlight.
Give the reeds some space.
Replace old reeds.
Step out of the room and come back later.
Check whether your diffuser needs a refill.
And if you're still not noticing your fragrance, it might simply be time for a change.
