Why Has My Reed Diffuser Stopped Smelling? 7 Things To Try
There’s nothing more disappointing than walking into a room and realising your reed diffuser doesn’t seem to smell anymore.
You loved the fragrance when you first opened it. Your home smelled incredible. And now… nothing.
Before you replace it, there are a few simple things worth trying. Reed diffusers can sometimes appear to stop smelling when the fragrance is still there — you just need to give it a little help.
Here are seven things to check.
1. Turn the reeds
This is the easiest thing to try first.
Reed diffuser fragrance travels up the reeds through capillary action, gradually releasing scent into the room. Over time, the exposed ends of the reeds can become less effective at releasing fragrance.
Simply turn the reeds upside down so the saturated end is at the top.
You should notice the fragrance become stronger again as the freshly soaked ends release the scent into the room.
Top tip: Place a tissue or piece of kitchen roll underneath the reeds when you turn them to catch any drips.
2. Check how much fragrance is left
As your diffuser gets towards the end of its life, there is naturally less fragrance available to travel up the reeds.
If the bottle is nearly empty, it may simply be time for a refill.
A Scotts reed diffuser can last up to 12 weeks, depending on the fragrance, room conditions and how often the reeds are turned.
Rather than throwing away the bottle, you can simply refill it and replace the reeds when needed.

3. Give your reeds a clean start
If you've been using the same reeds for a long time, they can become saturated with fragrance and dust.
When you refill your diffuser, we recommend using fresh reeds.
Fresh reeds allow the fragrance to travel through them more effectively and can help give your new fragrance a stronger scent throw.
This is also why we recommend replacing your reeds when you refill rather than continuing to use the same ones indefinitely.
4. Check where your diffuser is positioned
Where you place your reed diffuser can make a surprisingly big difference.
For the best fragrance, choose somewhere with a little natural air movement.
A hallway, entrance table or living room can be ideal because people moving through the space help distribute the fragrance.
Avoid placing your diffuser directly next to a radiator or in very strong sunlight. Heat can cause the fragrance to evaporate more quickly, meaning your diffuser may not last as long.
Think about where you naturally walk past in your home — rather than hiding your diffuser away on a shelf.
5. Don't use too few reeds
If your diffuser isn't smelling as strong as you'd like, try adding another reed or two.
The more reeds you use, the more fragrance can be released into the room.
However, this also means your diffuser will use fragrance more quickly.
If longevity is important to you, start with the recommended number of reeds and increase them gradually until you find the right balance for your room.
6. Consider the size of the room
A reed diffuser that smells beautifully strong in a small hallway may feel much more subtle in a large open-plan room.
That's completely normal.
Large rooms and rooms with high ceilings can need more fragrance to create the same scent experience.
If your diffuser is in a particularly large space, try moving it somewhere smaller and see whether you notice a difference.
You can also consider using more than one diffuser in a larger open-plan area.
7. Give yourself a scent break
This is one of the most overlooked reasons you might think your reed diffuser has stopped smelling.
Your nose can become accustomed to a fragrance when you smell it every day.
It's called olfactory fatigue, or nose blindness, and it means your brain starts filtering out a familiar scent.
Your guests may still walk through the door and immediately notice the fragrance — even though you can't.
Sound familiar?
It's one of the reasons we love hearing:
“Your house smells amazing.”
You might not notice your favourite diffuser anymore, but other people often will.
When should you replace your reed diffuser?
If you've tried turning the reeds, checking the fragrance level and replacing the reeds but the scent still isn't noticeable, it may simply be time for a new diffuser or refill.
The good news is that you don't necessarily need a completely new bottle.
If you have a reusable reed diffuser, simply clean the bottle, add a fresh refill and use new reeds.
It's an easy way to keep your favourite fragrance going while getting more life from the beautiful glass bottle.

How can I make my reed diffuser smell stronger?
If your reed diffuser isn't smelling as strong as you'd like, try these simple steps:
- Turn the reeds regularly
- Use fresh reeds when refilling
- Add an extra reed or two
- Position your diffuser where there is gentle air movement
- Avoid radiators and strong direct sunlight
- Make sure the diffuser is suitable for the size of the room
- Remember that you may simply have become used to the fragrance
And don't forget — stronger isn't always better.
The best reed diffuser creates a beautiful, noticeable fragrance without overwhelming the room.
